Metro is expanding into the South West and to support this growth we are opening an office in Exeter. We are looking for a Business Development Executive to identify new business opportunities, build and maintain strong client relationships and sales pipeline, ensure the satisfaction of our valued clients. This role combines the exciting challenges of sales and relationship management.


Key Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Identify and prospect new business opportunities (multimodal – sea and air) through market research and networking.
  • Build and maintain sales pipeline reviewing this on a weekly basis with the Branch Manager.
  • Develop and implement effective sales strategies to achieve revenue targets.
  • Promote Metro Visibility Tracking Tool and I.T. capability
  • Work closely with the pricing and procurement teams on quotations and tender responses


Account Management

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with existing clients, understanding their needs and ensuring their satisfaction.
  • Lead customer weekly/monthly meetings/calls as well as business/KPIs reviews
  • Act as a main point of contact for clients, addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and managing expectations Support collection process ensuring customers pay in accordance with agreed credit terms
  • Ensure new customers or lanes are implemented correctly (creating account, outsourcing to BPO, Brokerage or Transport, follow up & escalate on rates setup, SOPs…) Liaising closely with the onboarding team.
  • Support marketing campaigns and customer entertainment.


Customer Engagement

  • Proactively visit potential and existing customers to build rapport, understand their unique requirements, and strengthen our business relationships.
  • Conduct on-site meetings and presentations as needed.
  • Gather feedback from customers and incorporate it into service improvement initiatives


Sales Growth

  • Work as part of a team sharing knowledge and experience proactively
  • Assist with the creation and deliver presentations and pitches to potential clients
  • Monitor sales metrics, track progress, and report on sales activities and results


General Skills

  • 2+ years’ work experience in freight forwarding operations
  • Experience in customer development will be beneficial
  • Degree in relevant field e.g. Business, Supply Chain Management etc is preferred but not mandatory
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent negotiation and problem-solving abilities
  • Local Knowledge of South West region
  • Self-motivated and target-oriented
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong commercial acumen
