Advanced Innovative Engineering are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Test and Development engineer with specialised experience in engine testing and development to join our team in Lichfield. You are expected to be part of a multi-discipline engineering team and contribute at all times.


Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will support AIE in designing and verifying new innovations for the Wankel Rotary Engine power units supplied to Customers within the aerospace, transport and power generation markets. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the performance, reliability and safety of our aerospace engine systems through rigorous testing and development processes.

The Test and Development Engineer will be expected to perform the following tasks:


Development Activities

  • Interpret and translate Customer and Product requirements to system level testing.
  • Take ownership of development work packages for particular projects through all stages of the product lifecycle for concept to production.
  • Develop and maintain common processes and procedures relating to test and development engineering activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislative, regulatory and contractual requirements (based on recognised military/civil standards).
  • Develop appropriate verification strategies to demonstrate system compliance with specifications, industry standards and legislative demands.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis to determine appropriate corrective action required when investigating product/equipment failures.
  • Planning, executing and monitoring engineering development and qualification testing activities on IC engines.
  • Preparation of detailed development and qualification test reports.
  • Preparation of development and qualification test procedures that demonstrate verification of a design, in compliance with customer specification requirements.
  • Development and assembly of prototype and engineering test units.
  • Ownership and maintenance of engineering procedures related to engine development and test.
  • Working to aerospace industry standards & specifications as well as aircraft specific requirements.
  • Managing and maintaining engineering test equipment, instrumentation and facilities.
  • Technical support to production department, supporting production investigations as well as supporting the specification, commissioning and troubleshooting of production test equipment.
  • Working in a high quality, high safety environment.


Experience and Qualification Summary

  • Minimum experience of 5 years in a similar test & development role.
  • HND, degree level in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Understanding of gasoline/diesel engines and sub-systems in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience of dynamometer based engine testing, instrumentation and test facilities.
  • Practical experience of building engine and ancillary systems.
  • Practical experience of ECU mapping/calibration.
  • Engine electrical knowledge (sensory wiring and data comms).
  • Experience of environmental test methods for design verification and working knowledge of design certification for land based and airborne equipment.
  • Strong diagnostic problem solving skills.
  • Practical experience with test instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience using 3D CAD software packages including SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with RTCA/DO-160 and MIL-STD 810 standards.
  • Good R&D, aerospace and powertrain background.

The Person

Self-motivated, dynamic individual with an ability to see what needs doing and do it right. Whilst you may have to work alone, you should also be able to communicate with and participate in small group environments. Attention to detail is essential whilst planning and keeping sight of the bigger picture. You must be good at problem-solving with an ability to work to fixed deadlines.


Hours and Environment

Thirty-eight hours a week, Monday to Thursday 8.30 am to 5.30 pm (30-minute lunch) Friday 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.

21 days plus statutory bank holidays.
