Job Requirements/Description
We are looking for a support worker/carer for our 20 year old son, who has autism, who is able to provide 1:1 support to him at college and at home. He attends college on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9.30 am to 3.30 pm and has support to stay focused on his work at college and to complete simple work tasks at home such as help to prepare snacks or in the library until 5.45 pm. He currently has support but will need an additional person for a full day (9.15 to 5.30/5.45 pm) on a Monday so the role would not be suitable for someone who is available for only a few hours or a half a day.
Duties would also include supporting him with social skills, to manage risks and stay safe whilst at college. The qualities we desire above all would be those of honesty, reliability, patience and kindness. Some ability in English and Mathematics would be a help. Our son has a Level 3 BTEC in art and design so interest in art would also be desirable.
Our son has a long established ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis)/PBS (Positive Behaviour Strategy) home based program where tutors supported him across home and in Education. Our program allows lots of opportunities for wide and varied teaching and support. His support worker of 11 years has all of these qualities but has recently left to do a PGCE in order to train as a teacher so he urgently needs support.
Experience of ABA/PBS is not required as initial and ongoing training will be provided by an ABA/PBS Consultant. Aptitude in Mathematics and English would be required (a minimum GCSE level). Knowledge of psychology would be helpful but not essential. We have a friendly Cockerpoo dog so this would not be a suitable role for a person who is wary of dogs.
The post will require an enhanced DBS check.
