Job Title: Commissioning Engineer

Location: Market Harborough 20%, Client Site 80%

Purpose of the Role:

The Commissioning Engineer is a key member of the clients Northern Europe's Controls Team and vital in the successful delivery of projects. Responsible for the software creation, emulation and commissioning of Level 2 PLC control systems (commissioning & system testing) for automated materials handling solutions. Working in close conjunction with the Controls Services Manager(s) and ComC Lead, to successfully deliver projects. Supporting Junior ComC's and Apprentices with the project based activities. You will also effectively communicate with Project Managers Controls, Engineering Designers and Customers at the UK Head Office and at various installation sites across Northern Europe. You will promote a continuous improvement culture; focusing on individuals personal development, ensuring that the department is working efficiently while following group standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Pre-site Phase

  • Assist the ComC Lead with the creation of:
  • 3rd party interface documents
  • The FDS for the PLC's
  • PLC module lists
  • Generation of PLC code using the standard tools and architecture ensuring the version control process is followed
  • Undertake emulation of PLC's and subsystems in line with the goal definition
  • Provide guidance, support and mentoring to junior engineers and apprentices

Site Phase

  • Take ownership for the PLC area(s) and or products, ensuring that PLC software, hardware or electrical issues are identified and managed to resolution
  • Undertake full level 2 PLC commissioning, to include but not limited to:
  • Sign off of Level 1 Commissioning
  • Implementation of PLC's area software
  • Commissioning to achieve manual and automatic control
  • Commissioning of communications with WCS/WMS systems
  • Testing and verification of emergency stop systems
  • Integration of third party equipment and testing as required
  • Identify and rectify any software, hardware & electrical faults
  • Actively work with the ComC Lead, ComC and ComC Junior Engineers, SIM/SIT and Project Managers Controls in testing system and verification of PLC functionality, nodal and system rates
  • Attend daily controls stand up meetings to gather progress, issues status and plan daily resources

General

  • Communicate with the ComC Lead, Controls Services Manager(s) and wider commissioning team
  • Update all check sheets and progress trackers according to processes
  • Follow the software revision and back up process as required and ensuring all others within your team also follow the process
  • Ensure all changes or modifications are fed back to the project team and design department
  • Comply with all current health & safety legislation and promote a positive health & safety culture
  • Be an ambassador for the delivery of NE controls and actively promote company standards and best practice
  • Assist with developing Junior ComC Engineers and apprentices technical ability
  • Work with the Controls Services Manager(s) and wider team to develop and maintain best practice and guidance. Promoting both, continuous process improvements in efficiency

Key Requirements - Essential (E) / Desirable (D):

Knowledge

  • Ability to work within a team and co-ordinate activities when required E
  • Proven experience of generating PLC code (ideally using Siemens PLC's) E
  • Knowledge and experience of commissioning and testing automated systems E
  • Good of understanding of control systems (including but not limited to) E:
  • Networking & hardware components
  • Fieldbus technology i.e. Profibus, Profinet, ASi
  • Motion control via inverters and servo drives
  • Good fault finding and diagnostic skills E
  • Minimum NVQ level 3 / City & Guilds in electrical engineering D
  • Knowledge of functional safety programming D
  • Background in material handling / conveyor industry or similar D
  • Ability to design and develop HMI & SCADA systems D
  • Previous experience of emulating PLC skills D
