SENIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER, BUILDING SAFETY ASSURANCE

We're looking for a Senior Structural Engineer who is passionate about delivering the GOLD Standard in structural engineering solutions in the Built Environment to supplement our growing team of subject matter experts supporting our clients with their duties under the Building Safety Act 2022 for assessing the building safety risk of structural failure, and disproportionate collapse.

YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO;

As subject matter expert within our Professional Services Team at Ark Workplace Risk, you'll be responsible for working with a team of fire safety and structural engineering specialists providing fire safety and structural safety engineering support within the built environment.

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for carrying out forensic investigations of existing buildings to reverse engineer and assess all issues. You will be writing summaries of existing structural engineering information, supporting with the development of building safety case reports, conducting site inspections and providing reports, reviewing systematic risk assessments under requirement A3 of the Building Regulations, interpreting data from external wall investigations, project monitoring, application of relevant regulations, guidance and best practice to ensure structural safety in buildings.

The ideal candidate will have;

  • Worked within a Structural Engineering Consultancy, delivering the below services:
    • Structural scheme design.
    • Optioneering and justification of structural options.
    • Hand calculations to assess suitability and to carry out sense-checks on the spot.
    • FEA software output interpretation of results.
    • Knowledge of typical disproportionate collapse solutions and associated detail drawings.
    • Main point of contact in multi-million-pound projects, ideally residential.
    • Extensive knowledge of structural refurbishment works and major extensions.
    • Extensive knowledge in appraisal of existing structures experience.
  • Awareness of the Building Safety Act, including the Gateway 2 & 3 process (advantageous)
  • A sound knowledge of all structural safety and engineering guidance and latest structural engineering standards, in particular with regards to residential sector:
    • Eurocodes, including EC1-1-7
    • British Standards, including BS8110, BS5950, BS5268, BS5628.
    • and an appreciation of BS 7974 PD 1, PD 3, PD 7
  • Knowledge of external wall systems and façade engineering principles, including an appreciation of the PAS9980 methodology
  • Ability to advise of regulatory compliance
  • Knowledge of geotechnics, including ability to interpret information and advice contained within geo-environmental site investigation reports
  • Appreciation of structural fire protection and structural fire analysis and design.
  • Understanding of fire impact and external fire spread analysis
  • Ability to design and specify structural remedial works for existing buildings

QUALIFICATIONS, MEMBERSHIPS AND EXPERIENCE

  • BSc / BEng / MSc / MEng in Structural Engineering or relevant subject;
  • Member of a relevant institution, such as the IStructE, ICE;
  • Ideally Chartered or working towards Chartership;
  • Minimum 8 years of experience;

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Experience of structural engineered new build, extension and refurbishment works of buildings, ideally residential high rise;
  • Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and report writing ability;
  • Drive and ambition, with ability to thrive within a fast paced, dynamic environment;
  • Capability to multi-task and manage multiple projects;
  • Appreciation of the environment in which a building operates including the legal framework, responsibilities and accountabilities, due diligence, evidence management and verification, safety management, and information management;
  • Understand how buildings work including how building systems and components interact to affect performance and building safety;
  • Understand the practical measures for structural safety and be comfortable working in a team of structural safety professionals;
  • Understand risk management in buildings including the distinction between issues, hazards and risks, stages in risk assessment and risk response, and types of insurance cover;
  • Work collaboratively with a wide range of internal stakeholders to ensure optimal solutions for our clients;

In addition to your qualifications and extensive experience, you will bring strong interpersonal skills and report writing abilities as well as a comprehensive understanding of current UK regulations.

You will hold a full, clean driving license.

JOB SPECIFICS

  • We are offering a competitive package (subject to location, skills, experience and track record);
  • This is a home-based role, with project specific site attendance requirements;
  • The majority of our work is in and around London, however, the roles have a national remit, and you will be required to travel outside of London from time to time, so you must have the flexibility and willingness to travel as required;
